Acción de inhibidores de la síntesis de la quitina en la reproducción de Spodoptera littoralis (Boisd.) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) Anais da SEB
Lyra,Jairo R. M.; Ferraz,José M. G.; Silva,Ana P. P..
The effect of benzoilfenylureas on the reproduction of Spodoptera littoralis (Boisd.) was studied. Third instar larvae were treated with either lufenuron or flufenoxuron by ingestion and contact (DL60 rate). The surviving larvae were observed until the adult stage. Adult males and females were mated in different combinations between treated and untreated individuals. The following variables were studied: average number of spermatophore, female fecundity and percentage of ecloded larvae (egg viability). A small change in spermatophore number (ca. 1 to 1.5) was noted specially in the combinations where males were obtained from treated larvae. The percentage of fecundity of females and hatched larvae decreased (ca. 45% and 30%) when both sexes were obtained...

Description of the pupal case of Systropus (Systropus) nitidus Wiedemann, 1830 (Diptera, Bombyliidae, Toxophorinae, Systropodini) Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Rodrigues,Paula Fernanda Motta; Lamas,Carlos José Einicker.
The pupal case of Systropus (Systropus) nitidus Wiedemann reared from an unidentified tipical Limacodidae (Lepidoptera) cocoon is described and illustrated for the first time. Only species of Limacodidae are recorded as host of the immature stages of S. (Systropus). The geographical distribution of S. (Systropus) nitidus is restricted to Brazil, from Pará to Santa Catarina states. This is the first pupal case description and illustration of a Neotropical species of the subgenus Systropus.

Economic benefits to Papua New Guinea and Australia from the biological control of banana skipper (Erionota thrax) AgEcon
Waterhouse, Doug F.; Dillon, Birribi; Vincent, David P..
Larvae of the butterfly Erionota thrax, the banana skipper, destroy the leaves of bananas by eating them and forming massive protective rolls of leaf tissue. They were first observed in north-western Papua New Guinea in 1983 and over the next 6 years spread throughout the mainland at the rate of up to 500 km/year. E. thrax has also spread across the ocean to the east, to invade New Britain, Duke of York and New Ireland islands, and possibly Bougainville. As the banana skipper spread, it destroyed an average of some 60% of banana leaves, leading to both a serious delay in fruit maturation and reduced weight of banana bunches. Previous successful biological control of E. thrax when it invaded Mauritius, Hawaii, Guam and Saipan encouraged Papua New Guinea...

Esterase-3 polymorphism in the sugarcane borer Diatraea saccharalis (Lepidoptera, Pyralidae) Genet. Mol. Biol.
Ruvolo-Takasusuki,Maria Claudia C.; Machado,Maria de Fátima P.S.; Conte,Hélio.
The migration rate of esterases and their substrate specificity for 4-methylumbelliferyl esters (acetate, propionate, and butyrate) and alpha- and beta-naphthyl esters were analyzed in Diatraea saccharalis by starch gel electrophoresis. Substrate preference of esterases was observed with Est-2 and Est-8 isozymes showing substrate specificity for 4-methylumbelliferyl esters and Est-4 isozyme showing specificity for 4-methylumbelliferyl butyrate and alpha-naphthyl butyrate. Allele variation was detected at the Est-3 locus. Two alleles, Est-3F and Est-3S, were identified in pupae with fluorogenic and ester-naphthyl substrates. Chi-square analysis showed no differences between the observed genotypic frequencies and those expected on the basis of Hardy-Weinberg...

Exposure to Conspecific and Heterospecific Sex-Pheromones Modulates Gustatory Habituation in the Moth Agrotis ipsilon ArchiMer
Hostachy, Camille; Couzi, Philippe; Portemer, Guillaume; Hanafi-portier, Melissa; Murmu, Meena; Deisig, Nina; Dacher, Matthieu.
In several insects, sex-pheromones are essential for reproduction and reproductive isolation. Pheromones generally elicit stereotyped behaviors. In moths, these are attraction to conspecific sex-pheromone sources and deterrence for heterospecific sex-pheromone. Contrasting with these innate behaviors, some results in social insects point toward effects of non-sex-pheromones on perception and learning. We report the effects of sex-pheromone pre-exposure on gustatory perception and habituation (a non-associative learning) in male Agrotis ipsilon moths, a non-social insect. We also studied the effect of Z5-decenyl acetate (Z5), a compound of the sex-pheromone of the related species Agrotis segetum. We hypothesized that conspecific sex-pheromone and Z5 would...

Occurrence of Helicoverpa armigera (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) on tomato in the Espírito Santo state Horticultura Brasileira
Pratissoli,Dirceu; Lima,Victor LS; Pirovani,Victor D; Lima,Wallace L.
The species Helicoverpa armigera is one of the most important polyphagous and widely distributed pests in the world. Its occurrence was recently reported on soybean and cotton, in the states of Goiás, Mato Grosso and Bahia, Brazil. Tomato is also host species of H. armigera, among the 200 registered, being one of the most important crops in the Espírito Santo state. The production of tomatoes is fully dedicated for fresh consumption and the damage caused by H. armigera in fruits make unfeasible marketing. Therefore, this study aimed to record the occurrence of H. armigera in tomato crop in the Espírito Santo state. From February 2012 to October 2013, insects were collected from tomato plants in some producing areas. After insect identification, by...
